Pull&Bear Manchester reimagines the retail experience

Manchester, United Kingdom

A new generation of retail space combining architectural clarity with a strong creative spirit

Project location:

Manchester, United Kingdom

Project type:

Commercial project

Interior design:

Lázaro Rosa Violán Studio

Neolith materials:

Neolith Arena

Pull&Bear’s new Manchester flagship, located at Trafford Centre, introduces the latest evolution of the fashion brand’s store concept. Designed by Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio, the space reflects a more contemporary, urban, and flexible approach to retail, shaped by a collaboration with the brand that dates back to 2012.

That was when the studio first developed the “California” concept: the idea of imagining a road trip with friends along the coast in search of surf, translated into warm interiors with a nostalgic edge and references to iconic mid-century American design.

Over time, this identity has evolved alongside Pull&Bear’s audience, embracing increasingly urban influences while preserving the aspirational spirit associated with creativity, self-expression, and discovery.

Manchester is the first store to introduce the latest evolution of this concept. Here, the interior becomes a neutral architectural canvas designed to accommodate fashion, installations, and ever-changing creative content, while retaining the warmth that has long defined Pull&Bear’s retail identity.

“The Manchester store is the first expression of this latest evolution. The space becomes a canvas: a very neutral architectural shell that can accommodate changing elements. It retains the warmth of the previous concept, while bringing greater perceived quality to the product and much more clarity to the messages, almost like an audiovisual studio or an art gallery”.

From California to a new creative canvas

The new concept moves away from a more literal interpretation of California and toward an adaptable environment with a distinctly contemporary character. The architecture is intentionally restrained, allowing fashion, visual communication, and temporary creative interventions to continually reshape the experience.

This flexibility is central to the way the studio now understands the physical store. Beyond its commercial function, Manchester is conceived as a place where Pull&Bear’s community can meet and interact with the brand. The long-term ambition is for fashion to coexist with artistic and creative content across its retail network, giving stores a broader cultural dimension.

The result feels young and recognizably connected to the original California spirit, yet more urban, precise, and current. Warmth remains present, while architectural lines become clearer and the overall environment gives greater prominence to both the product and the ideas displayed around it.

Within this new approach, every permanent material had to establish character without limiting the store’s ability to evolve.

Neolith Arena as the foundation of the concept

Selecting the flooring was one of the earliest decisions in the design process. For Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio, defining the architectural canvas meant establishing the relationship between floors, walls, and ceilings from the outset.

Neolith Arena was chosen for the entire 805-square-meter floor in a Satin finish and 6 mm thickness. Its soft, neutral coloring responded to the warm palette envisioned for the architectural shell, while the movement across its surface introduced a more organic quality.

That combination was especially relevant within an interior defined by contrasts. The subtle depth of Arena creates a counterpoint to the harder, more architectural lines found overhead and across other elements of the store. At floor level, the surface appears to extend beneath furniture and displays, reinforcing the idea of an uninterrupted base upon which the retail experience can continually change.

“The Neolith flooring was one of the first decisions we made because defining that architectural canvas was fundamental. Arena immediately gave us the warmth of the neutral tones we were looking for, together with the depth and organic quality of the movement across its surface. It contrasts beautifully with the harder architectural lines of elements such as the ceiling and suggests a continuous floor beneath the furniture, almost like an infinite plane for creativity.”

The Satin finish adds another layer to this balance. Its refined matte appearance limits excessive glare under artificial lighting, allowing the flooring to maintain a softer visual presence while merchandise, displays, and architectural interventions remain in focus.

Across such an expansive area, the subtle tonal variation of Arena also prevents the floor from feeling static. The material brings depth to the space while preserving the clarity required by the wider design concept.

A material choice shaped by the realities of retail

The aesthetic qualities of the surface formed only one part of the specification. For Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio, retail projects require materials that respond to a much broader set of demands, particularly in stores designed for intensive daily use.

A high-footfall fashion destination must withstand continuous circulation, frequent cleaning, changing displays, deliveries, and the everyday operational demands of a major commercial space. Neolith’s resistance to abrasion, scratches, stains, and wear makes Arena suited to this type of environment, while its low porosity facilitates cleaning and hygiene maintenance.

UV stability also helps maintain the consistency of the surface in areas exposed to natural light, supporting its appearance over time. With a thickness of 6 mm, the selected material provides the performance required for the flooring application while integrating discreetly into the store’s contemporary architectural language.

For the studio, however, performance in retail extends beyond the properties of the material itself. A specification must also offer the right balance between aesthetics, technical performance, cost, service, and the ability to respond reliably to the scale and pace of an international retail network.

“In retail, it is essential to consider finishes that offer a strong balance between aesthetics, performance, cost, and quality of service. Durability, ease of cleaning, and sustainability are decisive factors for retail flooring. For Pull&Bear, the support of a brand such as Neolith is equally important when responding to an international network of locations, demanding construction schedules, and very high expectations for the final result.”

A store designed to keep evolving

Pull&Bear Manchester reflects a retail concept built around change rather than permanence. Its architecture establishes a clear and recognizable framework while leaving room for fashion, art, communication, and creative content to continuously redefine the space.

Neolith Arena plays a fundamental role within that framework. Its warmth gives character to the neutral architectural canvas, its organic movement introduces depth against the sharper lines of the interior, and its technical properties respond to the realities of a high-traffic commercial environment.

More than a backdrop, the floor becomes part of the thinking behind the store itself: a continuous foundation designed to support whatever comes next.

In Manchester, the original California idea has grown into something more urban and versatile, while retaining the sense of aspiration and creativity that defined it from the beginning. The result is a store conceived as an evolving physical meeting point for the Pull&Bear community, with an architectural language capable of adapting alongside the brand.
